About the book:
The line between exile and escape blurs beneath a relentless sun. What is a land worth, when it devours its own?
Drought has settled, and with it a climate of suspicion and unrest, where twenty nameless people are ushered beyond Beersheba's walls. Exiles from across the Southern Lands, just like them, stumble onto a lepers' camp, a place where the condemned find a precarious home. Here, the echoes of Khan the Poet's words linger—verse of dissent etched on the soul of his nephew, Ethan, an exile in his own right, not yet a poet, yet full of longing.
Reatile Mosoeu's The Lepers Poem is a haunting meditation on the human cost of power. In the slow unravelling of this parched world, the exiled people, in concert with Hezra, a foreigner, and his desperate attempts to provide for his village, will find themselves fighting just to continue on. These are not easy heroes, but flawed and compelling witnesses to a society's unraveling. The Lepers Poem is less concerned with grand pronouncements than with the quiet, agonising work of survival, and the difficult choices made in the long shadow of despair.
